Flightless Fruit Flies – Hydei

Flightless Fruit Flies (Drosophila hydei) are a staple live feeder for many small reptiles and amphibians. Their slightly larger size compared to melanogaster fruit flies makes them an excellent prey item for dart frogs, small geckos, hatchling reptiles, and other insect eating species that require small but nutritious feeders.

These flies are flightless, which helps make feeding easier and more controlled while reducing the chance of escape during handling. A properly maintained culture will continue producing flies as the life cycle progresses, providing a steady source of feeder insects.

Fruit fly cultures are commonly used by keepers of dart frogs, mourning geckos, small day geckos, juvenile anoles, and other small insectivores that thrive on appropriately sized live prey.

At Caliber Exotic Supply, we focus on dependable feeder cultures that provide consistent production and easy feeding for reptile and amphibian keepers.

For best results, keep cultures at normal room temperature and avoid exposing them to excessive heat or cold. Production may vary depending on environmental conditions and handling.
