Crickets (Acheta domesticus), commonly known as house crickets, are one of the most widely used feeder insects for reptiles, amphibians, birds, and small mammals. These 1/2-inch crickets provide a practical feeder size for many juvenile and adult insect-eating animals, depending on the species and the individual animal’s size.

Their natural movement helps stimulate a strong feeding response while encouraging hunting behaviour and enrichment. Crickets provide protein and moisture and are commonly included as part of a varied diet for bearded dragons, leopard geckos, chameleons, monitors, tegus, frogs, and other insectivorous animals.

Feeder crickets should be gut loaded before feeding to improve their nutritional value. Because crickets naturally contain more phosphorus than calcium, they should be dusted with an appropriate calcium or vitamin supplement according to the nutritional requirements of the animal being fed.

Store crickets in a secure, well-ventilated container at room temperature. Provide egg cartons or similar structures to increase usable surface area and reduce stress. Small portions of fresh vegetables, such as carrot, leafy greens, or potato, may be provided for moisture and gut loading. Remove uneaten food before it spoils.

To reduce the chance of crickets escaping or hiding in the enclosure, offer them using feeding tongs or place them in a smooth-sided feeding dish where appropriate. Remove any uneaten crickets that may disturb or bite the animal.
