Flightless Fruit Flies – Drosophila Melanogaster

Flightless Fruit Flies (Drosophila melanogaster) are one of the most commonly used feeder insects for small reptiles and amphibians. Their very small size makes them ideal for dart frogs, baby geckos, hatchling reptiles, and other insectivorous animals that require tiny live prey.

Melanogaster fruit flies are smaller than Drosophila hydei, making them particularly useful for newly hatched animals or species that struggle with larger feeder insects. They provide a manageable prey size while still delivering the benefits of live feeding behavior.

These flies are flightless, which helps reduce escape during feeding and makes handling cultures easier. When kept under normal room conditions, the culture will continue producing flies as the life cycle progresses.

Fruit fly cultures are widely used by keepers of dart frogs, mourning geckos, small day geckos, young anoles, and other small insectivores that rely on appropriately sized live prey.

At Caliber Exotic Supply, we focus on dependable feeder cultures that provide consistent production and easy feeding for reptile and amphibian keepers.

For best results, keep cultures at normal room temperature and avoid exposing them to excessive heat or cold. Production may vary depending on environmental conditions and handling.
