Pinhead crickets (Acheta domesticus) are newly hatched, very small house crickets commonly used as feeder insects for hatchling reptiles, small amphibians, juvenile arachnids, young birds, and other small insect-eating animals. Their small size makes them suitable for animals that cannot safely consume larger feeder insects.

Their active movement helps stimulate natural hunting behaviour and feeding responses. Pinhead crickets provide protein and moisture and can be included as part of a varied, species-appropriate diet.

Feeder crickets should be gut loaded before feeding to improve their nutritional value. Because crickets naturally contain more phosphorus than calcium, they should be dusted with an appropriate calcium or vitamin supplement according to the nutritional requirements of the animal being fed.

Store pinhead crickets in a secure, well-ventilated container at room temperature. Provide fine egg-carton material or similar structures to increase usable surface area and reduce crowding. Offer pinhead crickets in quantities appropriate for the animal’s size and feeding response. Remove uneaten crickets where possible to prevent them from hiding in the enclosure or disturbing the animal.
