Feeding Guidance

Selecting the correct feeder size is important for safe feeding.

Two commonly used guidelines are:

• Width Rule – Choose prey roughly the same width as the widest part of the reptile’s body.
• Body Weight Rule – Many keepers feed prey that is approximately 10% of the reptile’s body weight for maintenance, or up to 15% of body weight when encouraging healthy weight gain.

Every animal is different, so feeding schedules and prey size may vary depending on species, age, metabolism, and overall body condition.

Whole Prey Nutrition

Whole prey feeders naturally contain:

• muscle protein
• calcium from bone
• essential fats
• organ nutrients

Because of this natural balance, rats are considered one of the most nutritionally complete feeder options for carnivorous reptiles.
